During the meeting, preliminary feasibility and study reports related to the installation of smart meters were reviewed. Discussions focused on implementing the project in a way that delivers benefits to both electricity consumers and Electricity Distribution Lanka Ltd. (EDL).
The introduction of smart meters will enable real-time monitoring of electricity consumption and automated meter reading, eliminating the need for manual meter inspections and improving the efficiency and accuracy of billing.
As part of the initial phase of the project, smart meters are expected to be installed for consumers using more than 180 electricity units per month. Authorities stated that the installation will be carried out at no cost to eligible consumers.
Officials also highlighted that the initiative is expected to help consumers better manage and reduce their electricity bills while strengthening the long-term sustainability and operational efficiency of electricity distribution companies.
The discussion was chaired by Minister of Ports, Civil Aviation and Energy Anura Karunatilaka at the Parliament complex. The meeting was attended by Chairman Rohitha Jayaratne and other officials from Electricity Distribution Lanka Ltd. (EDL).
