Sri Lanka today (June 26) launched a nationwide anti-drug campaign under the theme "Ratama Ekata" (The Whole Nation Together) to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, with a series of awareness and enforcement initiatives taking place across the country.
As part of the day's events, a special awareness walk commenced this morning from Chaithya Road to the Kollupitiya Junction in Colombo. The event was attended by Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala and Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, along with government officials and representatives from security agencies.
The national campaign aims to combat drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking while raising public awareness and promoting a safer, drug-free society through the collective participation of state institutions and the public.
Meanwhile, the National Operations Headquarters and Media Centre established to coordinate the country's anti-drug initiative are scheduled to be officially opened this afternoon on Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 07.
The government says the campaign is intended to strengthen cooperation among state institutions, law enforcement agencies, and the public in the ongoing effort to eliminate the threat of illegal drugs from Sri Lanka.
