An alleged underworld member known as "Matiya," who is accused of serving as the gunman for detained organized crime figure "Kehelbaddara Padme," was deported from Malaysia and arrested by Sri Lankan authorities upon his arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport on Thursday night.

The suspect has been identified as Bombuwala Devage Suranga Sanjeewa Karunaratne (42), alias "Matiya," a resident of Yagodamulla, Kotugoda.

According to authorities, Karunaratne had previously been the subject of an Interpol Red Notice in connection with several serious criminal investigations.

He is primarily wanted over the fatal shooting at the Gampaha Court Complex on July 22, 2022, where alleged organized crime figure "Paspodda" and another individual were killed. Several other people were also injured in the attack. Investigators allege that Karunaratne was directly involved in carrying out the shooting.

The suspect was deported from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and arrived in Sri Lanka on AirAsia flight AK-047 at approximately 9:45 p.m. on June 25.

Upon his arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) took him into custody for further investigations.
