Speaking to the media, Deputy Inspector General of Police ( Traffic) W.P.J. Senadheera said that although many driving schools possess the required institutional licences, driving lessons are often conducted by instructors who do not hold the necessary certification.
He stated that police have issued clear instructions requiring all persons engaged in driver training to obtain a valid training licence, adding that those who fail to comply could face legal consequences.
The DIG noted that a significant number of road accidents involving young drivers are linked to inadequate training. According to him, many newly licensed drivers lack proper knowledge of road regulations, speed control and safe driving practices, increasing the risk of accidents.
He further revealed that discussions are currently being held with the Department of Motor Traffic to strengthen regulations governing driver training and licensing procedures, with particular attention being given to ensuring that learner drivers are trained only by qualified and certified instructors.
