A special three-day dengue eradication program gets underway today ( 24) as health authorities step up measures to control the growing spread of dengue amid the ongoing southwest monsoon season.

The campaign, which will continue until June 26, will be carried out across 600 Grama Niladhari divisions identified as high-risk areas for dengue transmission. The initiative will focus on environmental clean-up activities and mosquito breeding site elimination through coordinated action at the community level.

Government institutions, schools and local authorities are expected to actively participate in the programme, while a set of guidelines detailing immediate dengue control measures has already been issued to relevant agencies.

The decision to launch the operation was taken during a high-level meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat on Monday ( 22), under the patronage of Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa and Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.

During the discussion, officials examined both immediate and long-term interventions required to address the increasing dengue risk associated with prevailing rainy weather conditions.

According to the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), a total of 47,530 dengue cases and 29 dengue-related deaths have been reported across the country so far this year, highlighting the urgent need for intensified prevention efforts.
