Showers, thundershowers expected across Sri Lanka; Rough seas in several coastal areas

Showers and thundershowers are expected at intervals across several parts of Sri Lanka during the next 24 hours, according to the latest weather forecast.

The forecast indicates that Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western Provinces, as well as the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya, will experience showers or thundershowers at times throughout the day.

Meanwhile, a few locations in the Uva and Eastern Provinces may receive showers or thundershowers after 2:00 p.m.

Several sea areas around the island are also expected to experience unsettled weather conditions.

Rain Conditions at Sea

Showers or thundershowers may occur at several locations in the sea areas off the coast stretching from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

Wind Conditions

Winds over surrounding sea areas will be south-westerly, with speeds ranging between 30 and 40 km/h.

Wind speeds may strengthen to 55–60 km/h at times in the following sea areas:

Off the coast from Hambantota to Pottuvil

Off the coast from Mullaitivu to Puttalam via Kankasanthurai and Mannar

Sea Conditions

The sea areas extending:

From Hambantota to Pottuvil, and

From Mullaitivu to Puttalam via Kankasanthurai and Mannar

are expected to be rough at times.

Other sea areas around the island are likely to remain moderate.

However, mariners are advised that temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may develop during thundershowers.

Strong Winds Expected in Several Areas

Fairly strong winds of 30–40 km/h can be expected at times over:

The western slopes of the central hills

Northern Province

North-Central Province

North-Western Province

Southern Province

Trincomalee District

Authorities urge the public to take necessary precautions against localized strong winds, lightning, and adverse weather conditions associated with thundershowers. Fishermen and those engaged in marine activities are advised to remain vigilant and monitor future weather updates before venturing out to sea.
