Fresh from winning the men’s javelin event at the prestigious Diamond League meeting in Doha with a throw of 88.68 metres, Tharanga returned to Sri Lanka on Saturday and outlined his future goals.
The 24-year-old has enjoyed an outstanding month, securing a second-place finish at the Rabat Diamond League, setting a new Sri Lankan record of 92.62 metres while winning in Rome, and claiming victory at the Ostrava Golden Spike meet.
Speaking upon his arrival, Tharanga said he was delighted to return home after achieving four major international successes and revealed that his next major target is a medal at the Commonwealth Games.
“I’m very happy to return to Sri Lanka with four major achievements. It was difficult to produce a big throw in Doha after competing in four consecutive events. I have qualified for the Diamond League Final in Brazil, and my next goal is to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games. It’s a year filled with major competitions, and I’m looking forward to achieving something big,” Tharanga said.
His recent performances have elevated him to World No. 2 in men’s javelin, the highest ranking ever achieved by a Sri Lankan athlete in track and field.
