Speaking to the media after paying respects and receiving blessings from the chief prelates of the Malwathu Chapter and Asgiri Chapter in Kandy, the Prime Minister explained that the fuel currently available in the local market was imported around two months ago.
She noted that the government is still bearing a significant portion of the cost of these fuel stocks in order to keep prices affordable for the public.
“We have already provided relief to the people. If fuel prices reflected the actual cost, a litre would be around Rs. 700. However, due to the government's intervention and financial support, we have been able to maintain prices in the Rs. 400 range,” the Prime Minister said.
She further assured the public that any benefit arising from lower global oil prices would be passed on to consumers as soon as it becomes feasible.
“The moment we are in a position to provide the relief resulting from reduced oil prices, we will ensure that it is given to the people,” she added.
The government continues to monitor developments in the global energy market while balancing fiscal responsibilities and consumer needs.
