Speaking during a meeting with port trade union representatives, Premadasa said elections are the most effective democratic mechanism to assess public confidence in the current administration and its governance.
He stated that if the government is confident in its policies and direction, it should allow the people to deliver their verdict through Provincial Council polls.
The Opposition Leader also criticized the government for delaying the elections, noting that the current administration had previously advocated for holding them while in opposition. He argued that continued postponement deprives citizens of their democratic rights and urged the government to proceed with the elections without further delay.
Premadasa added that conducting Provincial Council elections would offer a clear indication of public opinion on the government’s reforms while strengthening democratic accountability and transparency.
