Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, recently visited the site designated for the construction of a new Artists’ Retreat (Kalakaru Nikethanaya) in Madiwela on June 12.

The proposed facility will be built within the premises of the Cultural Centre in Madiwela and is expected to provide a dedicated space for Sri Lankan artists to engage in creative work, foster professional networking, and exchange ideas with fellow artists in a relaxed and inspiring environment.

One of the primary objectives of the project is to offer quality accommodation for artists travelling to Colombo from distant regions of the country to participate in cultural and artistic activities. The initiative is also expected to create new opportunities for artistic collaboration and professional development within the local arts sector.

The inspection tour was attended by Chairman of the Sri Lanka Arts Council, Keerthi Welisarage; veteran actor Mahinda Pathirage; Chairman of the Visual Arts Sub-Council Prageeth Ratnayake; and literary scholar Kaushalya Kumarasinghe, along with several prominent artists.

Representing the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs were Additional Secretary (Cultural Promotion and Foreign Affairs) Dhammika Wijesinghe, Director of Cultural Promotion Dr. Prasad Ranasinghe, and a number of other government officials.

The planned Artists’ Retreat is expected to strengthen the country’s cultural infrastructure by providing a supportive environment for artists and promoting greater engagement within Sri Lanka’s creative community.
