She made these remarks at the official launch of the first phase of the Human Resources Module of the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) and the pilot project of the “e-Thaksalawa” Learning Management System (LMS) at Temple Trees on Friday.
The Prime Minister emphasized that every child should have equal access to quality education and that accurate data, sound policies and technology are essential to achieving this goal.
The new NEMIS platform is designed to improve human resource management and administrative efficiency within the education sector. It will integrate data from national and provincial schools into a single network, replacing the fragmented systems previously used by individual provinces.
Under the first phase, teacher transfer processes in the Sabaragamuwa, Western, Southern and North Western provinces will be managed through the system, with plans to expand it islandwide and cover all academic staff in the future.
The initiative is also expected to enhance transparency and efficiency in teacher recruitment, transfers and promotions.
Highlighting the importance of digital transformation, Dr. Amarasuriya noted that digitalization is essential for delivering transparent public services. However, she stressed that technology is not a replacement for teachers but a tool that strengthens their role.
She added that the “e-Thaksalawa” LMS will support teaching, learning and assessment while helping students in under-resourced schools gain access to quality education and expanding opportunities for children with special needs.
The project was implemented through the collaboration of the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Digital Economy, the Task Force on Digital Transformation in Education, provincial education authorities and the Sri Lanka Air Force.
