The Department of Meteorology has issued a Red Advisory warning of rough sea conditions and strong winds affecting several coastal sea areas around Sri Lanka.

According to the advisory, which came into effect at 6:30 a.m. today (June 7), conditions are expected to remain hazardous until 10:30 a.m. tomorrow (June 8). As a precautionary measure, naval and fishing communities have been strongly advised not to venture out to sea until further notice.

The warning covers sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaittivu, and from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.

The Meteorology Department stated that sea areas off the coast from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar will be very rough at times, accompanied by strong gusty winds reaching speeds of 60 to 70 kmph.

Meanwhile, sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaittivu and from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota are expected to experience rough conditions with gusty winds of 50 to 60 kmph.

The department further warned that wave heights could increase to between 2.0 and 2.5 metres in sea areas stretching from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.

Authorities have urged fishing and naval communities operating in the affected regions to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to safety advisories issued by relevant agencies.
