Speaking during a discussion with academic staff, administrative officers and public officials at the Kurunegala Regional Centre on June 5, the Prime Minister said the Government would take steps to address long-standing challenges faced by the centre, including space constraints and infrastructure needs.
Discussions focused on identifying land for future expansion and improving lecture halls, sanitation facilities and other infrastructure. The Prime Minister noted that once the required land is secured, planning and funding arrangements should proceed without delay.
Addressing the media following the meeting, Dr. Amarasuriya also highlighted several ongoing education initiatives. She said the Government officially launched its education digitalisation programme and is continuing work on education reforms, including curriculum changes for Grade 6 and Grade 2 scheduled for 2027.
The Prime Minister added that textbooks for the second and third school terms under this year’s Grade 1 education reform have already been distributed, while teacher training programmes for next year are being rolled out. She also said approval has been granted to proceed with Teacher Efficiency Bar Examinations following discussions with the Public Service Commission.
Dr. Amarasuriya further announced that Cabinet approval has been received to address salary anomalies affecting school principals, with the Ministry taking steps to implement the decision and resolve a long-standing issue faced by principals.
The event was attended by Dharmapriya Dissanayake, other Members of Parliament, Kurunegala Regional Centre Director Anushka Bandara, and members of the academic and administrative staff.
