The Police Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) has recovered a cache of weapons, including a locally manufactured Mini Uzi-type automatic firearm, concealed in a public cemetery in Colombo.

Police said the discovery marks the first time a locally produced variant of the Mini Uzi automatic weapon has been seized in Sri Lanka.

The recovery followed information obtained during the interrogation of alleged underworld figure Mahawatte Chamara, who was recently deported from Dubai and is currently being detained by the CCIB.

Acting on intelligence provided by the suspect, investigators uncovered the hidden weapons cache, which included the Mini Uzi-type firearm, a foreign-manufactured pistol, a magazine, and three rounds of live ammunition.

Senior police officials stated that while intelligence units had previously received reports about the existence of a locally made version of the weapon, this is the first time law enforcement has successfully recovered one.

Investigators believe the weapon was manufactured and used by criminal groups to intimidate rival underworld factions. Further investigations into its origin and links to organized crime are ongoing.
