Speaking to the media in Colombo today (02), the Minister said the revision would be proportionate to the impact of higher electricity costs on water supply operations.
He noted that electricity expenses account for around 12 percent of the overall water tariff structure, and the recent increase in electricity tariffs has directly affected this cost component.
Addressing public concerns over a possible rise in water bills, Minister Ranasinghe assured that the adjustment would be minimal.
“Electricity costs contribute about 12 percent to the water tariff, and that component has increased by around 18 percent. Therefore, only that portion will be adjusted on a per-unit basis, and the overall increase will be very small,” he said.
The Minister further explained that changes in electricity prices have a direct impact on water supply costs, making a minor revision to water charges unavoidable.
