The fully renovated Institute of Neurology at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL), upgraded at a cost of Rs. 99 million, is scheduled to be officially opened to the public today (June 1).

The inauguration ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the hospital premises under the patronage of Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, with the participation of Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni.

The Institute of Neurology provides specialized services for the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles. Health authorities state that the renovation project will significantly enhance and expand neurological healthcare services in Sri Lanka.

As part of the opening ceremony, the Minister is also scheduled to unveil a portrait of the institute’s founder, Dr. J. B. Peiris. In addition, the newly renovated Neurology Unit Ward Complex 62/63 will be officially declared open.

The ward complex consists of two wards—one male and one female—with 22 beds in each ward, providing improved accommodation and treatment facilities for patients.

The Ministry of Health allocated Rs. 52 million for the renovation of the Ward 62/63 complex. A further Rs. 22 million was invested in refurbishing the Physiotherapy Unit on the ground floor, while Rs. 25 million was allocated for the modernization of the Speech Therapy Unit, Occupational Therapy Unit, and the auditorium on the third floor.

Following the opening of the new facility, Neurology Units 3 and 4, which are currently housed in a building more than 100 years old in Ward 16, will be able to operate in a more spacious and modern environment. The upgraded infrastructure is expected to reduce congestion and provide improved comfort and convenience for both patients and healthcare staff.

Several distinguished guests from the health sector are expected to attend the event, including Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe and Additional Secretary Dr. Kumar Wickramasinghe, among other senior health officials and dignitaries.

The project marks a significant milestone in strengthening Sri Lanka’s neurological healthcare infrastructure and improving access to specialized treatment services for patients across the country.
