Officials stated that the new system came into operation from May 1, with all 14 insurance companies now issuing digital insurance cards instead of physical cards.
Under the new arrangement, motorists purchasing insurance policies will receive a digital insurance card through a web link or QR code.
Authorities said police officers have also been equipped with a dedicated digital verification platform, enabling them to instantly confirm whether a vehicle possesses valid insurance during roadside inspections.
Officials noted that nearly six million plastic insurance cards had been issued annually in the past, contributing significantly to environmental waste.
They stated that the digital initiative would help reduce the large-scale use of plastic while minimising environmental impact.
Vehicle owners will be able to access their insurance details through mobile applications, web portals, SMS links, or printed QR codes where necessary.
Authorities further announced that a National Motor Insurance Database has now been established to facilitate real-time verification of insurance validity.
A special “1338” National Verification Hotline has also been introduced, with services available through calls, SMS and IVR facilities for insurance verification purposes.
Officials said the digital platform has improved the efficiency of roadside vehicle inspections by allowing police officers to rapidly verify insurance documentation.
Verification can be completed through three methods as follows, Dialing the USSD code *1338#, Sending the vehicle number or insurance number via SMS to 1338, Calling the hotline 1338 for direct assistance.
