The 2026 State Vesak Festival marking 2570th Buddhist Year will officially begin tomorrow (27), with all arrangements completed to launch the national celebrations centered in the southern district of Sri Lanka.

This year’s national Vesak program, titled “Dakshina Prabha”, will be held across the Matara District from May 27 to June 2, featuring a series of religious, cultural, and social welfare activities.

Organized under the guiding theme “Abhiththaretha Kalyāṇe”—a Buddhist teaching encouraging virtuous and timely action—the festival also carries the social message, “Let us unite swiftly for the common good.” Events will take place throughout the district as part of a nationwide effort to promote Buddhist values and community harmony.

The main inauguration ceremony is scheduled to be held at the historic Thihagoda, Middellawala Purana Rajamaha Viharaya tomorrow (27). The ceremony will be officiated by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, marking the official commencement of this year’s state Vesak celebrations.

Authorities state that all logistical and ceremonial preparations have been finalized to ensure smooth conduct of the week-long national observance, which will highlight religious devotion, cultural heritage, and community service across the region.
