The Cabinet has approved the implementation of a three-year technical cooperation project aimed at increasing milk production in Sri Lanka’s dry zone with a financial grant of Rs. 300 million from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The project is expected to focus on developing training and educational programmes for dairy farmers, introducing suitable technologies, strengthening pasture production and supply, and promoting hygienic milk production and consumption.
The initiative will target dairy farmers producing between 20 and 100 litres of milk per day across the Northern, Eastern, North Central and North Western provinces.
Under the programme, two districts from each of the four provinces will be selected, while three veterinary divisions from each district will be identified for implementation activities. Authorities also plan to establish 24 model farms across the selected provinces, with three model farms in each veterinary division.
The proposal to implement the Technical Cooperation Project for the Development of Milk Production in the Dry Zone was submitted by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation and received Cabinet approval.
