Today (18) marks 17 years since the defeat of the brutal LTTE terrorism that plagued Sri Lanka for more than three decades.
Speaking at a media briefing held at the Government Information Department on the 14th, Chairman of the Ranaviru Seva Authority, Brigadier S.B. Kohona, stated that the annual commemoration is organized to honor and remember the war heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom and sovereignty, both during the war and in the years that followed.
He further noted that while the event will be conducted in its traditional format, several special additions have been introduced this year. Greater opportunities have been provided for the families of fallen war heroes to participate in the ceremony alongside the armed forces personnel.
A group of Tamil and Muslim war heroes from the Northern and Eastern provinces will also attend the event, while special arrangements have been made to enable their family members to participate as well.
According to Director of the Ranaviru Seva Authority, L.M.C.B. Nissanka, a total of 2,769 participants, including invited guests, members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Special Task Force, Civil Security Department, National Cadet Corps, Ranaviru Seva Authority, and parents of war heroes, are expected to attend the ceremony.
In addition, 160 parents of fallen war heroes will be given the opportunity to visit the War Heroes Memorial and offer floral tributes together with the distinguished guests.
