The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory for sea areas between 20°N to 10°S latitude and 60°E to 100°E longitude. The notice is effective for 24 hours from 7.00 a.m. today (14).

According to the department, the low-pressure area located northeast of Sri Lanka continues to persist. However, the system is expected to move away from the island towards the northeast and gradually weaken within the next 36 hours.

Due to the influence of this system, an increase in wind speed and rainfall is expected in the sea areas around Sri Lanka over the coming days. The Department of Meteorology has urged the fishing and naval communities to remain attentive to future forecasts and warnings issued regarding the situation.

Rainfall and Wind Conditions

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas around the island.

Winds will blow from the southwest at speeds of 25–35 kmph. Wind speeds may increase up to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam, Colombo, Galle, Hambantota and up to Pottuvil.

Sea Conditions

The sea areas off the coast from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam, Colombo, Galle, Hambantota and Pottuvil will be rough at times, while the other sea areas around the island will be fairly rough.

Wave heights in the sea areas off the coast from Puttalam to Colombo, Galle, Hambantota and Pottuvil may rise to about 2.0–2.5 metres. Authorities clarified that this does not refer to waves reaching inland coastal areas.

During thundershowers, temporary strong gusty winds may occur, causing the sea to become very rough temporarily.

Bay of Bengal Sea Areas

The low-pressure area northeast of Sri Lanka continues to affect the Bay of Bengal sea region as well. The system is expected to move northeastward away from Sri Lanka and gradually weaken within the next 36 hours.

The Department warned that strong winds, heavy rainfall and rough seas could occur in the deep sea areas of the Bay of Bengal over the next few days due to the system’s influence.

Fishing and naval communities have again been requested to pay close attention to future weather advisories issued by the Department of Meteorology.
