Director of Irrigation (Hydrology and Disaster Management) L.S. Sooriyabandara stated that water levels in the Nilwala River, Gin Ganga, Kalu Ganga and Attanagalu Oya are gradually receding as rainfall has decreased in recent days.
He added that river levels have dropped in most locations, except for the Millakanda area along the Kalu Ganga, where water levels remain relatively high.
However, Sooriyabandara warned that the current improvement may only be temporary, as further rainfall has been forecast by the Department of Meteorology for the coming days.
According to the Department of Irrigation, 18 of the country’s 73 major reservoirs are currently overflowing, while another 18 medium-scale reservoirs are also releasing excess water.
Authorities stressed that the present discharge of water does not indicate a severe flood situation at this stage, but advised the public to remain alert and closely follow future warnings and instructions issued by relevant authorities.
Meanwhile, the Divisional Irrigation Engineer in Wariyapola stated that all sluice gates at the Deduru Oya Reservoir, which had previously been opened, were closed at 7.00 AM today (14).
