The low-pressure system situated northeast of Sri Lanka continues to influence weather conditions across the island, raising concerns over flooding and landslide risks due to ongoing heavy rainfall.

In its latest advisory, the Department of Meteorology stated that the system is expected to gradually weaken and move away from the country within the next 48 hours. However, rainy and windy conditions are likely to continue over the next few days.

Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued Level 2 landslide warnings for 11 districts amid the prevailing adverse weather.

Authorities also confirmed one weather-related death reported from the Batticaloa District yesterday.

According to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), 203 individuals belonging to 62 families have been affected by the severe weather conditions so far, while 39 houses have sustained partial damage.

The Department of Meteorology further noted that showers and strong winds are expected to persist for at least the next two days under the influence of the low-pressure system.

The public, particularly fishing and naval communities, have been advised to remain vigilant and closely follow future weather forecasts and official advisories.

Meanwhile, the Department of Irrigation reported that as of yesterday evening (13), 19 major reservoirs and 19 medium-scale reservoirs were spilling due to the continuous rainfall.

Heavy rainfall in upper catchment areas has also caused water levels in the Kalu, Nilwala and Gin rivers, along with the Attanagalu Oya, to remain elevated.
