Heavy rains that followed Cyclone Ditwha have caused severe flooding across the Puttalam District, submerging government institutions, schools, the main hospital, roads, and residential areas, according to Y.M. Indika Silva, the District Secretary of Puttalam.

The intense rainfall, which began this morning, flooded several major and minor roads in Puttalam town, disrupting transportation and daily activities.

Areas including Anamaduwa, Mahakumbukkadawala, Mundel, Wanathavilluwa, and Pallama were also severely affected, causing major disruptions to normal life.

Floodwaters entered the premises of the main hospital in Puttalam, forcing the Sri Lanka Army and hospital staff to work together to remove water that had entered several ward units.

Schools across Puttalam town were also inundated after students had already arrived for classes. Teachers reportedly informed parents through WhatsApp groups and telephone calls to come and pick up their children due to the worsening conditions.

Several key government offices, including the Deputy Inspector General’s Office, the Department of Meteorology office in Puttalam, the Divisional Secretariat, and the Puttalam Headquarters Police Station, were also affected by flooding.

The District Secretary stated that many villages in the area had gone underwater, leaving residents facing severe hardships as heavy rains continue to impact the district.
