The National Building Research Organization has warned that people living in mountainous and landslide-prone areas should remain highly vigilant due to the heavy rainfall currently affecting several parts of Sri Lanka.

The organisation stated that the prevailing adverse weather conditions have increased the risk of landslides, earth slips and rockfalls, and stressed the need for the public to strictly follow safety guidelines.

According to the NBRO, residents have been advised to clear drainage systems around their homes to allow rainwater to flow freely and, where possible, remove large trees and other potentially dangerous objects located above residential properties.

People have also been instructed to build protective drainage channels to prevent water from flowing over elevated embankments behind houses and to ensure rooftop rainwater is properly directed away from vulnerable areas.

The NBRO further urged residents in high-risk locations to remain continuously alert for early warning signs of landslides and to immediately inform Grama Niladharis or relevant authorities if unusual conditions are observed.

The organization also noted that in the event of an emergency, residents should move to safer locations without delay, warn neighboring communities and promptly notify the relevant authorities.
