The Cabinet has approved a proposal to amend the Animals Act No. 29 of 1958, expanding the legal definition of “animal” to include pigs, goats and sheep in addition to cattle and beef.

The decision was taken in principle on December 1, 2025, and aims to update the interpretation clause of the long-standing legislation.

Following Cabinet approval, the Legal Draftsman has prepared the amended Bill in all three official languages.

The draft has also received clearance from the Attorney General, confirming its readiness for the next stage of the legislative process.

Based on these developments, the Cabinet has now approved a proposal by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation to publish the Bill in the Government Gazette.

After publication, the amended Bill will be submitted to Parliament for debate and approval.
