Donald Trump says he is not satisfied with the latest Iranian proposal, adding that he is not sure “we’re going to get to a deal” to end the war. The US president’s comments came as Tehran sent new proposals for talks to end the deadlock via mediator Pakistan.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says Iran remains open to diplomacy if Washington alters its “expansionist approach” and “threatening rhetoric”.

Two Israeli raids in the southern Lebanese town of Haboush killed six people, including a woman and a child, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency. The Israeli military issued a forced displacement order for another town in the area, despite the US-backed “ceasefire”.

Trump has put himself in a difficult position given that the legality of the war is questionable and he has now reached the 60-day mark of the 1973 War Powers Resolution, which states the president must end hostilities if he hasn’t obtained Congressional approval, continued Koh.

Trump has “put himself into a box because he wants to now…claim victory and be able to withdraw, because it’s obvious…that with 200 days to the midterms, this is an albatross that’s not going to get better,” Koh told Al Jazeera.

The war has had a “disastrous” impact on the economy, the environment and the price of oil, said Koh.

“The problem is that if what Trump wants to do is, for example, use US ground troops to remove whatever nuclear materials they can find, that risks more US casualties,” said Koh, adding: “the more casualties they have, the more likely it is that Republicans will shift in their vote and suddenly vote for these resolutions.”
