President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has appointed G.M.R.D. Aponsu as the new Secretary to the Ministry of Energy, reinforcing the government’s focus on strengthening economic and energy sector governance.

The official letter of appointment was handed over this afternoon (17) at the Presidential Secretariat by Secretary to the President, Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.

Aponsu, a senior officer of the Sri Lanka Planning Service (SLPS), previously served as the Senior Additional Secretary to the President for Finance and Economic Affairs. With extensive experience in national planning and public financial management, he has played a key role in shaping economic policy and development strategies.

During his tenure at the Presidential Secretariat, Aponsu headed the Finance and Economic Affairs Division, where he provided strategic policy guidance on macroeconomic management, development financing, tax policy, and national development priorities.

He brings a wealth of expertise spanning macroeconomic forecasting, financial analysis, and higher education planning, making him well-positioned to oversee the country’s energy sector at a critical time.

Aponsu received his early education at Lunawa Roman Catholic School and Moratuwa Uyana Primary School, before continuing his studies at B/Keppetipola Maha Vidyalaya and St. Joseph's College, Bandarawela.

He holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Physics from the University of Ruhuna, along with postgraduate qualifications in Atmospheric Physics from the University of Colombo and Economics from the Australian National University. He also earned a Master of Science in Development Studies from the Institute of Developing Economies Advanced School (IDEAS) in Japan.

Throughout his public service career, Aponsu has held key roles in several major state institutions, including the National Planning Department, the National Budget Department, the Inland Revenue Department, and the Ministry of Education.
