A group of Buddhist monks from Istanbul, Türkiye, arrived in Sri Lanka on the morning of April 17 to participate in a planned peace walk across the island.

The monks, who arrived on April 16 in Istanbul, are scheduled to take part in a peace pilgrimage from Anuradhapura to Colombo’s Independence Square, which will be held from April 21 to April 28. The initiative is being conducted under the full patronage of the government.

The walk will be led by the Most Venerable Pannakara Thero, together with a large assembly of Maha Sangha. A sacred Bodhi sapling obtained from the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura is also expected to be carried during the pilgrimage.

The event receives support from several government and private institutions, including the Presidential Secretariat, the Clean Sri Lanka programme, the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, as well as the Tri-Forces and the Police.

Organizers say the walk will also showcase Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage along with traditional arts and cultural performances throughout the route.
