The Sri Lanka Police Headquarters has introduced a new WhatsApp number to enable the public to submit video evidence of reckless and dangerous driving incidents.

With the growing use of social media in modern society, many people now capture and share videos of everyday incidents online.

Among these are recordings of traffic violations and unsafe driving behavior on public roads. Authorities have observed that some of these videos are already being forwarded to the police, helping identify offenders.

The police noted that such public contributions have led to the swift arrest of a significant number of suspects involved in dangerous driving, and legal action has already been taken against them. The Sri Lanka Police expressed their appreciation for the public’s support in this regard.

To further strengthen this initiative, a dedicated WhatsApp hotline — 070-4755600 — has been launched. The number operates 24 hours a day under the direct supervision of the Deputy Inspector General in charge of Traffic Control and Road Safety.

The police urge citizens to submit videos of incidents such as excessive speeding, unsafe overtaking, reckless motorcycle stunts (e.g., riding on one wheel or with one hand), and dangerous railway crossings. When submitting footage, the public is requested to include details such as the date, location, and relevant police division.

Authorities also warned against sending AI-generated or manipulated videos, emphasizing that only genuine footage should be shared.

The Sri Lanka Police encourage the public to actively support this initiative, which aims to reduce traffic violations and improve road safety by ensuring swift legal action against offenders.
