The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has announced that its islandwide token strike is continuing today (April 10). A special central committee meeting has been convened this morning to decide whether the strike will be extended further.

The strike, which began on April 8, was launched in protest against the Ministry of Health for allegedly violating agreements reached with the GMOA regarding internship appointments.

However, the industrial action has caused significant inconvenience to patients. Reports indicate that many individuals who visited hospitals yesterday (April 9) were severely affected due to limited medical services.

Despite the ongoing strike, several key hospitals—including maternity, children’s, cancer, and kidney hospitals—are continuing to operate without disruption. Additionally, the National Institute of Mental Health in Angoda has not been affected by the strike.

It has also been reported that some doctors in certain hospitals have chosen not to support the strike and have continued their duties.
