Parliament today approved the extension of the State of Public Emergency under the Public Security Ordinance, securing a decisive majority of 110 votes.

A total of 137 Members of Parliament voted in favor of the motion, while 27 voted against it. The motion was passed following a division requested by Shanakiyan Rasamanickam, a Member of Parliament representing the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK).

Opposition to the motion came from several parties, including the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK), New Democratic Front (NDF), and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). Additionally, Jaffna District Independent MP Ramanathan Archchuna voted against the motion.

The extension of the emergency regulations allows the government to continue exercising special powers under the Public Security Ordinance, a move often justified by authorities as necessary to maintain public order and national security.

Further debate surrounding the necessity and implications of the extended emergency is expected to continue both inside and outside Parliament.
