Highlighting the severity of the issue, she noted that 83% of deaths in Sri Lanka are caused by non-communicable diseases, with approximately 125,000 deaths reported annually.
Dr. Alahapperuma further pointed out that accidents are the leading cause of hospitalizations in the country, with around 1.2 million people admitted each year for treatment. Additionally, more than 10,000 deaths are reported annually due to accidents.
Health authorities urge the public to adopt healthier lifestyles and exercise caution, especially during the festive season, to reduce these risks.
