The President of the Doctors' Trade Union Alliance for Medical and Civil Rights, Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa, has raised serious concerns over delays in issuing diagnosis cards in hospitals across the island, stating that the situation is causing significant hardship to patients and their families.

He noted that patients who complete inpatient treatment are often informed by specialist doctors in the morning that they can be discharged. However, the required diagnosis card—essential for discharge—is frequently issued only by 5 or 6 p.m., leading to prolonged waiting times.

According to Dr. Sanjeewa, this delay disproportionately affects patients from remote areas, particularly those who are critically ill. Many face difficulties in securing transport at late hours, including challenges in hiring vehicles or accessing public transportation to return home.

He pointed out that most hospitals have intern doctors who could assist in expediting the process. By implementing administrative measures, such as allowing patients cleared in the morning to be discharged earlier in the day, and those cleared later to leave in the evening, these issues could be significantly reduced.

Dr. Sanjeewa also highlighted the financial strain on families, noting that relatives often incur high costs when arranging transport for disabled or recovering patients. Extended waiting periods near hospitals further add to their expenses.

He stressed the need for hospital directors to address the matter in coordination with specialist doctors and develop a structured system to streamline the discharge process.

Warning that such inefficiencies are increasing public dissatisfaction with the health sector, Dr. Sanjeewa urged both the President and the Minister of Health to take immediate action to resolve the issue.
