The writ petition filed by suspended Deputy Secretary General of Parliament, Chaminda Kularatne, was taken up yesterday (27) before a bench of the Court of Appeal comprising President’s Counsel and Court of Appeal President Judge Rohana Abeysuriya and Judge Priyantha Fernando.

Appearing on behalf of the Speaker, President’s Counsel Kanag-Iswaran informed court that there was no possibility of settlement in the matter. The bench subsequently ordered that the case be called again on June 2, 2026, for confirmation of facts.

During proceedings, President’s Counsel Nigel Hatch, appearing with Attorney-at-Law Shantha Jayawardena on behalf of Ministers Bimal Rathnayake and Anil Jayantha, reiterated that a preliminary objection would be raised regarding the jurisdiction of the court.

President’s Counsel Upul Kumarapperuma, representing another respondent, also presented submissions relating to a similar preliminary objection on jurisdiction that had been raised previously.

Meanwhile, President’s Counsel Uditha Igalahawa appeared on behalf of the Secretary General of Parliament, while President’s Counsel Kuvera de Soysa represented Assistant Secretary General Hansa Aberathna.

It was also noted that although the Attorney General had previously appeared on behalf of the Speaker, arrangements had been made yesterday (27) for President’s Counsel Kanag-Iswaran to represent the Speaker in this matter.
