Sri Lanka has reached a milestone in global travel storytelling, as Shenelle Rodrigo has been appointed the Sri Lanka’s first Destination Correspondent by Lonely Planet.

Over the past decade, Rodrigo together with her partner Shehaan Thahir has built a powerful digital presence through their platform “Sheneller,” documenting the island’s people, places, and untold stories. Their work has played a crucial role in reshaping international perceptions of Sri Lanka, particularly during challenging periods.

From the aftermath of the 2019 Sri Lanka Easter bombings to the global COVID-19 pandemic and the country’s Sri Lankan economic crisis of 2022, Sheneller consistently delivered real-time, on-the-ground insights. Their reporting provided clarity to global audiences and helped counter misinformation at critical moments.

Most recently, during the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah, the platform became a trusted source for travelers, sharing timely updates and addressing safety concerns. According to the platform, their content reached over three million international viewers, helping maintain tourism confidence and safeguard an estimated $800,000 in tourism revenue.

Rodrigo’s appointment reflects a growing recognition of local storytellers in shaping national narratives. Earlier this year, Sheneller achieved another milestone by becoming the first content creator-led series featured on SriLankan Airlines’ in-flight entertainment system.

In her new role with Lonely Planet, Rodrigo will spotlight lesser-known stories from across Sri Lanka, focusing on culture, history, and cuisine. Her work aims to go beyond traditional travel guides, offering deeper, more immersive experiences for global travelers.

This collaboration marks a significant first an international travel authority partnering directly with a Sri Lankan content creator in such a capacity highlighting the rising influence of authentic, locally driven storytelling in the global tourism landscape.
