Media Spokesperson of the Association, Arosha Rodrigo, stated that the new levy was approved under the 2026 Budget and will not apply to vehicles that are currently in the process of being cleared.
He further said that the tax will be charged at the Customs at the point of clearance.
Speaking at a media briefing held in Colombo today (13), Rodrigo said that although 2.5 per cent may appear small, it would have a noticeable impact due to the high value of vehicles.
“Since the value of a vehicle is high, 2.5 per cent is a somewhat significant tax. For example, the price of a vehicle worth Rs. 1 million would increase by about Rs. 2.5 million. Therefore, with the addition of this tax, a considerable increase in vehicle prices can be expected,” he said.
However, he added that vehicle purchases are currently being made with enthusiasm following the ‘Ditwa’ effect.
