A Satyagraha campaign launched by a group of fishermen demanding the lifting of the government’s ban on the use of tractor-mounted winches for Madel (seine net) fishing was called off this evening, following successful discussions with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The protest, which continued for nine consecutive days, was staged to urge authorities to reconsider restrictions on the use of tractor-mounted winches, a method widely used in Madel fishing operations. The fishermen argued that the ban had severely impacted their livelihoods and daily income.

Representatives of the fishermen held talks with the President earlier today (13), during which their concerns were discussed in detail. According to sources, the discussions were constructive, leading to a mutual understanding and assurances regarding a review of the matter.

Following the meeting, protest organizers announced the decision to call off the Satyagraha campaign, expressing optimism that their grievances would be addressed through dialogue.
