Foreign Minister is scheduled to make a special statement in Parliament tomorrow (09) regarding the recent resolution of the Geneva Human Rights Commission and the Sri Lankan government’s position expressed at that session.

Sri Lanka, while firmly opposing coercive international action, rejected Resolution 60/L.1/Rev.1 presented to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, Switzerland.

During the 60th session of the UNHRC, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Himalee Arunatilaka, reiterated the country’s categorical rejection of the unprecedented and ad hoc move to expand the Council’s mandate. She emphasized Sri Lanka’s objection to the proposal to establish an external evidence-gathering mechanism under the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

The Foreign Minister’s upcoming statement is expected to outline Sri Lanka’s diplomatic stance and clarify the government’s approach to protecting national sovereignty while engaging with international human rights mechanisms.
