Fuel Station Planned for Delft Island the first in the island’s history

Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Bimal Rathnayake announced that work has officially commenced on developing the access road leading to the Kites, Kurikadduwan Jetty a significant step toward improving transport connectivity to the islands off the Jaffna Peninsula.

 Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Jaffna, the Minister emphasized that the project will greatly enhance accessibility for both residents and visitors traveling to the northern islands.

In a landmark move, Minister Rathnayake further revealed that an agreement has been reached with the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) to establish a fuel station on Delft Island (Nedunthivu) the first in the island’s history.

The new facility, to be developed in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Navy, will ensure that Delft Island residents have access to fuel at the same price as in Colombo. The initiative is expected to ease transportation difficulties faced by the local community and support economic activities on the island.

According to the Minister, both projects align with the government’s broader efforts to improve infrastructure and promote regional development across the Northern Province.
