The Department further noted that the sun will be directly overhead Sri Lanka between 28 August and 7 September due to its apparent southward relative motion. On 28 August, the nearest locations where the sun will be directly overhead around 12:11 p.m. are Naagadeepaya (Nainativu), Pooneryn, Manelkadu and Aliyawalei.

The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory for 28 August 2025, forecasting showers at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces as well as in Galle and Matara districts.

Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely in certain areas of Sabaragamuwa province and in the Nuwara Eliya and Kandy districts. Several spells of showers are also expected in the North-western province and in the Hambantota district.

Meanwhile, strong winds of 40–50 kmph are forecast over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central, Western and North-western provinces, as well as in Trincomalee and Hambantota districts. The public has been urged to take precautions against potential damage caused by strong winds.

Sea Area Forecast (Next 24 Hours)

Showers are expected in sea areas extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle. Winds will be westerly to south-westerly with speeds of 30–40 kmph, increasing to 50–60 kmph in the sea areas from Chilaw to Mannar via Puttalam and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

The seas off Chilaw to Mannar and Matara to Pottuvil are expected to be rough at times, while the seas off Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle and from Mannar to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai and Mullaittivu will remain fairly rough.

The public, as well as the fishing and naval communities, are advised to remain vigilant.
