Two people were killed and seven others injured after a van collided with an electricity pole on the Magalegoda–Naiwala Road in Veyangoda.
The deceased have been identified as 21-year-old Navod Chathuranga of Heendeniya, Veyangoda, who was driving the van, and his 80-year-old grandmother.
According to police, the family was returning home to Heendeniya after attending a wedding ceremony when the accident occurred.
Nine people, including the bride’s brother, who was driving the van, and the bride’s mother, father and grandmother, were travelling in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
All nine occupants sustained injuries and were admitted to the Gampaha District General Hospital. The driver and his grandmother later succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment.
The remaining seven injured persons are continuing to receive treatment at the hospital, according to the Veyangoda Police.
Police are conducting further investigations into the accident.
