The Sri Lanka Navy has been formally authorized to carry out independent maritime security operations under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence, following the issuance of a Gazette notification.

High-level review meetings, chaired by Deputy Defence Minister Maj. Gen. Aruna Jayasekara (Retd) on August 18 and 21, finalized policy decisions and operational strategies. The Deputy Minister underscored the strategic and economic importance of the move, citing benefits to national security and foreign exchange earnings through maritime stability.

Navy Commander presented an operational framework for deploying specialized maritime security teams and formalizing agreements with Private Maritime Security Companies (PMSCs) and local shipping agents.

Under the new framework, the Navy can provide services and logistical support to foreign PMSCs protecting merchant vessels, as well as facilitate the storage of firearms and related equipment in designated armories, generating revenue for the government.

The initiative was reviewed by senior defence officials, including Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), Presidential Advisor J.M. Wijebandara, and representatives from Rakna Arakshaka Lanka Limited (RALL) and the Ceylon Association of Shipping Agents (CASA), in a unified effort to strengthen Sri Lanka’s maritime security.
