The Archdiocese of Colombo has called for an investigation into a complaint by social activist Namal Kumara regarding a voice recording circulating on social media that allegedly defames Archbishop of Colombo, His Eminence Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith.

Speaking to the media today (December 29), Rev. Fr. Jude Krishantha, Media Director of the Archdiocese, strongly condemned Kumara’s actions, accusing him of being an abettor in the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks. He claimed Kumara is acting on behalf of a third party to tarnish the Cardinal’s reputation.

On December 24, social activist Namal Kumara lodged a complaint with the President’s Secretariat and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), alleging that an audio recording circulating on social media defames the Archbishop of Colombo, His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith.

Addressing this issue, Rev. Fr. Jude Krishantha stated, “As a representative of the Catholic community, I strongly denounce the complaint filed by Namal Kumara against the Cardinal. The audio recording in question, which has been widely shared on social media, is believed to be of  former MP Ranjan Ramanayake.”

He further alleged that the detention of former DIG Nalaka De Silva, who was investigating Zaharan Hashim’s activities before the Easter Sunday attacks, was part of a larger conspiracy that enabled the tragic bombings. Rev. Fr. Krishantha accused Kumara of being a key figure in this mission and suggested possible involvement by the Rajapaksa family in the current allegations.

The Archdiocese urged the Inspector General of Police to investigate the matter and ensure justice, emphasizing the severe damage caused to Cardinal Ranjith’s reputation by these allegations.
