The Cabinet has approved extending rice importation until January 10, 2025, following a decision made at yesterday's (December 23) Cabinet meeting.
Cabinet Spokesman, Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, announced that the rice import permit, which expired on midnight December 20, has been extended.
Minister of Trade Wasantha Samarasinghe confirmed that the related gazette notification will be issued soon.
Sri Lanka Customs reported that by December 20, 67,000 metric tons of imported rice had arrived in the country. This includes 28,500 metric tons of raw rice and 38,500 metric tons of Nadu rice.
Customs Media Spokesman, Additional Director General Seevali Arukgoda, stated that Rs. 4.3 billion was collected as import tax revenue from these stocks.
