The circular banning school teachers in the Western Province from conducting paid private tuition classes for their own school students has been temporarily suspended.

This decision was made after the Governor of the Western Province intervened due to objections raised about the circular.

The ban was applicable during school hours, after school, and even on weekends or public holidays.

Minister Jayasinghe stated that the Governor has directed the suspension of the circular until the matter is reviewed and a policy decision is made.

The circular, issued by Western Province Secretary of Education K.A.D.R. Nishanthi Jayasinghe on last week (December 20) was addressed to the Director of Education, Regional Directors, Divisional Directors of Education, and all school principals in the province. It instructed them to inform teachers of the regulations and warned of disciplinary action for non-compliance.
