The retirement age for government doctors has been extended to 63 years, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa announced today ( December 19).
Speaking to the media, Minister Jayatissa stated that the decision also applies to doctors who were scheduled to retire on December 31.
Previously, the retirement age for government doctors was 65 years, but it was reduced to 60 years in 2022 by the former government. The current government has now decided to revise the age to 63, with Cabinet approval granted for the extension.
This decision aims to address staffing concerns in the healthcare sector while retaining experienced professionals.
