Deputy Secretary General of Parliament, Chaminda Kularatne stated that, A Speaker's resignation becomes constitutionally valid only after it is formally submitted and accepted by the President, paving the way for the appointment of a new Speaker.
Deputy Secretary General of Parliament, explained that under Standing Order 6/1, once the Secretary General of Parliament is notified of the resignation, the election of a new Speaker must occur at the next sitting of Parliament.
According to parliamentary rules, whenever the Speaker’s position becomes vacant, Parliament is required to elect a new Speaker at its first meeting after the vacancy.
Parliament is scheduled to meet on December 17 and 18, during which it is expected that a new Speaker will be appointed.
