The Fraud Investigation Bureau (FIB) informed the Colombo Magistrate's Court today (December 13) that it has launched an investigation into several candidates from the last Presidential Election and their representatives for failing to submit proper expense reports.
This requirement is mandated under the Regulation of Election Expenditure Act No. 03 of 2023.
The investigation follows seven complaints filed by the Election Commission regarding non-compliance with the law. FIB officials explained in court that candidates and their representatives were required to submit detailed reports on their election expenses to the Election Commission by October 13, 2024. However, some candidates and representatives have not fulfilled this obligation, which constitutes a legal violation.
During the court session, the FIB requested time to investigate and present a progress report. The Colombo Magistrate’s Court ordered the bureau to conduct a thorough investigation and submit an update by March 14, 2025.
