Sri Lanka is to welcome the arrival of a substantial consignment of 15 million imported eggs on December 17, according to the Sri Lanka State Trading (General) Corporation.
The corporation has concurrently organized the distribution of 10 million quality-assured eggs to Sathosa outlets on December 18.
Chairman Asiri Walisundara revealed that the incoming egg consignment will undergo testing before its release into the local market. This move aims to ensure the quality and safety of the imported eggs.
Trade Minister Nalin Fernando, as of December 15, disclosed that the State Trading Corporation has been granted permission to continue importing eggs until the end of April 2024. This decision was prompted by the need to regulate the escalating prices of eggs in the local market. Minister Fernando emphasized that the government is prepared to sustain egg imports if local producers fail to curb the surging prices.
Local egg producers had earlier stated that eggs could not be sold below Rs. 55 each until the conclusion of the Christmas season. The government’s measures aim to alleviate the impact of high prices on consumers during this festive period.
